Section 01

What Does “Bespoke” Mean?

A 17th-century English tailor's workshop — bolts of cloth stacked on wooden shelves, a tailor's ledger open on the counter, candlelight, and a length of fine woollen fabric being unrolled for a customer
A fabric “bespoken” or reserved for one customer alone. The origin of a word that still defines the highest standard in tailoring.

The Origin of the Word

The word “bespoke” originates from 17th-century England. When a tailor’s customer selected a bolt of cloth, that fabric was said to have been “bespoken”, or spoken for, reserved exclusively for that individual. No one else would wear clothing made from that piece of cloth.

That sense of absolute exclusivity remains at the heart of what bespoke means today.

Spoken for. Reserved. Belonging to one man alone, before a single stitch has been sewn.

The Etymology of Bespoke 17th Century English Tailoring Tradition

The Modern Definition

In its truest, most rigorous sense, as defined by the Savile Row Bespoke Association and other respected tailoring bodies, a bespoke garment is one that is:

01

Created From Scratch

Built entirely for one specific individual. No shared blocks. No standardised starting point. You are the only blueprint.

02

A Unique Pattern

A pattern is drafted specifically for your body, no pre-existing blocks or base templates used at any stage.

03

Multiple Fittings

Typically 3 to 5 fittings or more, each one refining the garment until it is a precise expression of your body.

04

Master Handcraft

Hand-crafted to a significant degree, involving highly skilled artisan tailoring that can represent 50 to 80+ hours of work.

05

Your Involvement

The customer is involved at every stage, be it cloth selection, lining, buttons, lapels, and every structural detail.

A bespoke suit is, in essence, a piece of wearable craftsmanship. The pattern created for you belongs to you and is often stored by the tailor for the duration of your relationship with them.

Atelier Insight

On Savile Row, a master tailor will take upwards of 30 individual measurements, including the slope of your shoulders, the asymmetry between your left and right side, and even how you naturally stand at rest. The pattern they produce is yours alone, archived with your name in their records.

What Bespoke Is Not

It’s important to note that the term “bespoke” is not legally regulated in most countries outside the UK. Even within the UK, its regulation is limited to certain associations.

This means many brands use the word “bespoke” to describe what is, in practice, a highly customised made-to-measure service. The two are excellent in their own right, but they are not the same thing.

Always Ask

Before booking any “bespoke” service, ask the tailor directly: Do you create a pattern from scratch, or do you start from a base block? Their answer tells you everything.

So What Exactly Is Made-to-Measure?

Now that you know what true bespoke means, Section 2 explains made-to-measure in equal depth — and why it may be the smarter choice for most men.

Read Section 2
Section 02

What Does “Made-to-Measure” Mean?

The Foundation

Made-to-measure (MTM) begins with an existing, standardised pattern, what tailors call a “block”, which is then adjusted and modified according to the individual customer’s measurements. Rather than building the pattern from nothing, the tailor or clothier starts with a proven foundation and adapts it.

And this is the point that deserves emphasis: this is not a shortcut or a compromise . It is a distinct, well-respected methodology in its own right, one that has clothed generations of well-dressed men with precision and intention.

A proven foundation, adapted with precision for one man alone. That is custom tailoring.

The Made-to-Measure Principle Proven craft. Modern precision. Accessible excellence.
A tailor adjusting a base block pattern at a cutting table, explaining cutting in bespoke vs made-to-measure.
A skilled fitter adjusts a base block to your exact measurements.

The Modern Definition

A genuine made-to-measure garment delivers across six defining dimensions, each one representing a meaningful step above anything you will find ready-made on a rail.

01

Your Measurements. Your Pattern.

A base pattern is altered specifically to match your unique measurements, not a standard size approximation.

02

Fitted to Your Body

Adjustments made for height, weight, posture, and the natural asymmetries every body carries that no off-the-rack garment addresses.

03

Extensive Personalisation

Fabric, lining, lapel style, button choice, stitching, monogramming, the garment reflects your taste at every detail.

04

Fewer Fittings Required

Typically one or two fittings, making the process genuinely practical for the modern professional man without months of appointments.

05

More Accessible Price Point

Produced more efficiently without sacrificing quality and delivering exceptional value at a fraction of bespoke pricing.

06

Dramatically Superior Fit

The fit of a well-made MTM garment is dramatically superior to anything off-the-rack, and often indistinguishable from bespoke to most observers.

Atelier Insight

The finest MTM providers today use over 20 individual body measurements, including posture analysis and shoulder slope, combined with digital pattern adjustment software. The result is a garment that fits your body with a precision that would have been considered bespoke-only territory a decade ago.

The Spectrum of Made-to-Measure

Made-to-measure itself exists on a spectrum. Understanding where a service sits on that spectrum helps you choose with confidence.

Tier 01 Entry Level

Standard Adjustments

Core size adjustments for length, chest, and waist. A meaningful step above off-the-rack. Ideal for first-time buyers or those building a wardrobe on a considered budget.

Tier 02 Mid Range

Comprehensive Customisation

Multi-point measurements with significant personalisation options, fabric, lining, lapel style, buttons, and monogramming. This is where most professional men building a quality wardrobe will find their home.

Tier 03 Premium MTM

Approaching Bespoke Territory

Extensive body mapping, posture correction, complex customisation, and access to the finest cloth selections. The distinction between premium MTM and entry-level bespoke is finer than most people realise and the price difference remains significant.

The Fitting Process – Step by Step

What actually happens between your first appointment and the moment you collect your finished garment? Section 4 walks you through both journeys in full.

Read Section 4
Section 04

The Fitting Process: How Each Works

Two journeys. Both deliberate. Both personal. One measured in months, the other in weeks.

The Bespoke Journey

The bespoke experience is exactly that, an experience. It typically unfolds over several months and multiple visits. Each appointment builds on the last, each fitting refining a garment that is becoming, slowly and deliberately, an expression of you alone.

A second or third fitting session of a bespoke suit. A great tailor reads your body as carefully as your brief.
01
Consultation The master tailor takes comprehensive measurements, often 30 or more, noting every nuance of your body: posture, shoulder slope, how you stand, any asymmetry between your left and right sides. Fabric preferences and stylistic desires are discussed in depth.
02
The Baste Fitting A rough, loosely sewn version of the garment called the “baste” is constructed and worn. This allows the tailor to see how the cloth falls on your actual body and make significant structural adjustments before permanent construction begins.
03
Forward Fitting The garment has progressed significantly. The tailor checks fit, balance, hang, and the accuracy of earlier adjustments. Further refinements are marked and made. The suit is beginning to reveal itself.
04+
Final Fitting The completed or near-completed garment is presented. Fine adjustments may still be made. Many tailors offer a courtesy follow-up fitting after delivery. The suit is yours.

This process is deliberate, intimate, and deeply personal. There is nothing quite like it in the world of dress.

The Bespoke Promise

The Made-to-Measure Journey

Made-to-measure is designed to be efficient without sacrificing quality . Three clear stages. One exceptional outcome.

Step 01

Measurement Appointment

A trained fitter takes 10 to 20 measurements and notes your preferences: fit style, fabric, lining, lapel, button stance, monogramming. Many modern services incorporate body scanning for extraordinary precision.

Step 02

Production

Your garment is cut and constructed based on your adjusted pattern. This happens off-site, often in a specialist production facility or atelierwith your measurements at the centre of every decision.

Step 03

Fitting on Delivery

You try on the completed or near-completed garment. Minor adjustments are made on the spot or the garment is returned for modification. The result: a garment made for your body.

The MTM Advantage

The streamlined process makes made-to-measure a realistic choice for men who want an exceptional fit and personalised garment without committing months and multiple trips to a tailor. Efficient. Intentional. Yours.

What Does It Actually Cost?

Cost Differences Explained

Two different price points. Two different structures. Both completely justified, once you understand what drives each.

A tailor's hands pad-stitching
a suit lapel canvas by hand

Why Bespoke Commands Premium Pricing

The cost of a bespoke garment reflects several deeply considered factors, each one contributing to a result that cannot be achieved any other way.

01
Master Craftsperson Time

A bespoke suit can represent 50 to 80+ hours of skilled hand labour.

02
Multiple Fittings

Time costs for both client and tailor across 3 to 5 appointments, each one essential to the result.

03
Pattern Creation & Storage

A unique pattern is created and maintained for each client – yours alone, archived indefinitely.

04
Premium Cloth

The finest wools, silks, and linens are almost always standard, cloth that off-the-rack can never justify.

05
Workshop Overheads

Prestigious locations, often Savile Row or equivalent, with the overheads that excellence requires.

Worth Noting

This is not expensive for nothing. For those who can access it, bespoke represents one of the finest investments in personal appearance and dress.

Why Made-to-Measure Offers Exceptional Value

Made-to-measure costs less not because quality is compromised, but because the process is more efficient . That efficiency passes directly to you.

Base patterns eliminate the time needed to create something from nothing without reducing the precision of your fit.

Fewer fittings reduce time costs for all parties, yours and the tailor’s alike.

Production can be scaled without sacrificing personalisation, meaning quality remains constant at lower price points.

The result: extraordinary garments at far more accessible prices, available to any man who chooses to dress with intention.

Section 07

Which Is Better? The Honest Answer

The Most Important Thing This Guide Can Tell You

Neither is “better.” They are different tools for different needs.

This is not a diplomatic dodge. It is genuinely true.

Choose Bespoke If

Bespoke Is the Right Choice

You have a complex body shape that standard patterns cannot accommodate

You want the absolute pinnacle of tailoring craft as an experience in itself

You are investing in a garment for the long term, a suit that will last decades

Budget is not a primary constraint

You value the relationship with a master tailor and the process as much as the product

You want a true heirloom piece, something to be passed on

Choose MTM If

Made-to-Measure Is the Right Choice

You want an outstanding fit and personalised garment at a more accessible price

Your lifestyle demands multiple high-quality pieces, not just one extraordinary one

You need your garment within weeks, not months

You are building a professional wardrobe with intention and care

You want significant customisation without the full bespoke investment

You prefer a streamlined, efficient process

The Honest Reality

For most men reading this, made-to-measure will transform how you look and feel in your clothing. The gap in quality between a well-made MTM garment and a bespoke piece is far smaller than the gap in price. For the vast majority of professional men, made-to-measure is not a compromise, it is the smart, considered choice. And for those who later want to explore bespoke? An excellent made-to-measure experience is the perfect gateway.

The global heartland of bespoke tailoring remains Savile Row, London home to houses including Huntsman, Anderson & Sheppard, Henry Poole, and Norton & Sons.

Naples, Italy

Home of the Neapolitan tradition, soft construction, handwork, and unrivalled artisanal skill. Houses include Kiton, Rubinacci, and Cesare Attolini.

Where to Find Made-to-Measure

Made-to-measure has become considerably more accessible in recent years. You will find it offered across four distinct channels, each serving a different kind of man.

01

Premium Department Stores

In-store tailoring services within established retail environments: convenient, trusted, and increasingly sophisticated.

02

Online MTM Platforms

Digital measurement and mailing processes that deliver personalised garments without requiring an in-person visit: growing rapidly in quality and precision.

03

Independent Tailors

04

Specialist MTM Partners in Retail

Specialist MTM providers partnering directly with men’s fashion retailers, bringing custom tailoring into the stores where men already shop. This is where the landscape is changing most rapidly.

How TailorWear Is Bringing Made-to-Measure to Men’s Fashion Stores

For many men researching the bespoke vs made-to-measure debate, the biggest hurdle isn’t budget, it’s accessibility. They assume they have to seek out a traditional, standalone tailor.

One of the most exciting developments in accessible tailoring is the emergence of B2B made-to-measure partnerships, where specialist MTM providers work directly with existing men’s fashion retailers to offer custom garments without the retailer needing to build the infrastructure and capabilities themselves. TailorWear is at the forefront of this model. And the expertise behind it is anything but ordinary.

Industry Authority

Founded by Someone Who Has Done This Before, at Scale

TailorWear was founded by Neeraj, whose credentials in the world of made-to-measure tailoring are, frankly, exceptional.

Neeraj designed the Made-to-Measure programme for Raymond, one of the most recognised and trusted names in men’s fabric and fashion across Asia. If you’ve ever worn or considered a Raymond made-to-measure garment, you’ve experienced a programme that Neeraj built.

Beyond designing the MTM model itself, he also managed Raymond’s retail and tailoring business, giving him a rare, end-to-end understanding of how made-to-measure works not just in the atelier or the fitting room, but across an entire retail operation at scale.

This is a background in building systems that serve real customers, in real stores, day after day.

What TailorWear Does

TailorWear partners with men’s fashion stores to integrate a professional made-to-measure service directly into the retail experience. Rather than sending a customer away to a separate tailor, a TailorWear-partnered store can offer its customers the full made-to-measure journey, right from measurements, fabric selection, personalisation, and delivery, as a seamless, natural extension of the store’s existing service.

Because Neeraj has operated at every level of this process, from designing the MTM system itself to managing the retail environment in which it lives, TailorWear brings a depth of practical knowledge that most MTM providers simply cannot match.

B2B Value

What This Means for Retailers

Add genuine value to the customer relationship beyond off-the-rack sales.

Increase average transaction value through premium made-to-measure commissions.

Differentiate your store in a highly competitive retail market.

Retain loyal customers who might otherwise leave to seek tailoring services elsewhere.

Zero infrastructure needed – TailorWear handles the production and technical expertise.

Partner with proven scale – backed by someone who built this exact model for Raymond.

End-User Value

What This Means for Customers

Access to professional measurement and fitting advice inside a retail store you already trust.

A remarkably wide range of fabrics, lapel styles, linings, and personalisation options.

Authentic made-to-measure quality delivered at an accessible price point.

The sheer convenience of a familiar retail environment combined with the elevated quality of custom tailoring.

A service designed by an expert who delivered MTM at scale for one of menswear’s most storied names.

TailorWear’s model recognises a powerful truth: most men don’t seek out tailors, they shop in the stores they know. By bringing made-to-measure into those stores, and doing so with the operational and design expertise that Neeraj built at Raymond, TailorWear is making elevated, personalised clothing accessible to far more men, without compromising on quality, fit, or experience.

For Men’s Fashion Retailers

The Executive Compendium

Bespoke vs Made-To-Measure: FAQs

What is the difference between bespoke and made-to-measure?

Bespoke clothing is made from a unique pattern created from scratch specifically for one individual, involving multiple fittings and a high degree of hand craftsmanship. Made-to-measure starts from a base pattern that is adjusted to the individual’s measurements, typically involves fewer fittings, and is produced more efficiently, still delivering an excellent, personalised fit at a more accessible price.

Is bespoke better than made-to-measure?

Not necessarily. Bespoke offers the highest level of tailoring craft and precision, particularly for men with complex body shapes or those seeking a true heirloom garment. Made-to-measure offers outstanding fit and extensive personalisation at a more accessible price point and in a shorter timeframe. For most men, made-to-measure represents exceptional value and quality.

Is made-to-measure worth it?

Yes, for most men. A properly made MTM garment fits your specific body, can be personalised to your preferences, and looks dramatically better than off-the-rack clothing. It is one of the most impactful investments a man can make in his wardrobe.

How many fittings do bespoke and made-to-measure require?

Bespoke typically requires 3 to 5 or more fittings over several months. Made-to-measure usually requires 1 to 2 fittings, a measurement appointment and a final fitting on delivery.

How much does bespoke tailoring cost?

A bespoke suit from a respected tailor typically starts at approximately £1,500 to £2,000 at the entry level, with Savile Row suits commonly ranging from £4,000 to £10,000 or more. Costs vary significantly by tailor and location.

How much does made-to-measure clothing cost?

Made-to-measure suits typically range from approximately £300 to £1,500 depending on the service, fabric quality, and level of craftsmanship. Premium MTM services approach bespoke quality at a fraction of the price.

How long does it take to get bespoke clothing made?

Bespoke clothing typically takes 3 to 6 months from the first appointment to delivery. Made-to-measure is considerably faster, usually 2 to 8 weeks.

Can made-to-measure clothing be personalised?

Yes. Most made-to-measure services offer extensive personalisation, like fabric selection, lining, lapel style, button choice, pocket configuration, monogramming, and more. The degree of personalisation varies by provider but is typically significant.

What is a baste fitting in bespoke tailoring?

A baste fitting is the first fitting in the bespoke process, where a loosely assembled version of the garment, sewn together with long, removable stitches, is tried on. This allows the tailor to assess how the cloth falls on the body and make major structural corrections before more permanent construction begins.

Is made-to-measure the same as custom?

“Custom” is a broad term that can describe both bespoke and made-to-measure. True bespoke is always custom, but not all custom is bespoke. Made-to-measure is custom in the sense that it is tailored to your measurements and preferences, but it uses a base pattern rather than one created entirely from scratch.

Which is right for me, bespoke or made-to-measure?

If you have the budget, time, and desire for the ultimate tailoring experience, bespoke is extraordinary. If you want an exceptional, personalised garment that fits beautifully, delivered efficiently and at an accessible price, made-to-measure is an outstanding choice that suits the majority of men extremely well.
