The TailorWear Compendium

Customer Segments & Product FAQs

I am buying my first proper suit. How do I know what is right for my body and my work life?

For a first commission, we start with your calendar and your silhouette. We look at how you spend most of your weekdays, your industry, and the kind of rooms you walk into, then pair that with your shoulder line, posture, and natural stance. From there, we recommend one or two core silhouettes and fabrics that give you the maximum number of useful outfits, rather than overloading you with options. You might like to read our handbook for the first suit for men.

I am worried about getting “talked into” something too formal or flashy. How advisory is the process at TailorWear?

The atelier protocol is deliberately consultative, not transactional. We share point‑of‑view, explain trade‑offs, and show you why a particular fabric or lapel choice helps or hurts your brief. You always make the final call; our role is to ensure you fully understand what that choice will look and feel like in real life.

How many fittings will I need for my first suit, and how long does it take?

For a first‑time client, we recommend an initial measurement and style consultation, followed by at least one basted or trial fitting, with a fine‑tune if required. Most first suits are ready in 12–15 working days, depending on fabric, the nature of your travel calendar, and our workload. We always work backwards from any hard dates you share.

I work in banking/consulting and need suits that look sharp but can handle long days and travel. How do you design for that?

For high‑pressure corporate roles, we prioritise cloth and constructions that hold a clean line from morning to late‑evening while still breathing in Indian and global climates. That usually means mid‑weight, high‑twist suiting fabric, and a pattern that takes into account how you sit, stand, and gesture in real meetings. Bankers are our biggest client pool, and we have a great insight into their requirements. Some of it is captured in our Banking Dress Code Checklist.

I already own several suits. What is the point of commissioning with TailorWear instead of buying another ready‑made piece?

Most executives we work with do not need “more suits”; they need a smaller number of precisely engineered pieces that photograph well, travel well, and are consistent with the leadership image they want to project. We study what is already in your wardrobe, identify the gaps, and build suits that work as a system rather than as isolated purchases. You might like to go through the Suit Purchase Market Audit, where you get to compare all the options you may have.

I travel between Mumbai, Dubai, Europe, and the US. Can one pattern really follow me across these circuits?

Yes, provided it is designed for your reality at the outset. Your core pattern is built around your body; the fabric, construction, and even internal details can be tuned for different circuits—lighter canvases and open weaves for Mumbai and Dubai, more structured options for colder boards in Europe and the US. Over time, your commissions become a coordinated wardrobe, not a random collection of suits. You should read 7 different types of suits to know more about different suit silhouettes. I am visiting Mumbai for a short trip. Is there enough time to commission a bespoke suit or sherwani?

If we know your travel dates in advance, we can often align measurements, fittings, and delivery within a single visit or a visit plus shipment. For shorter stays, we prioritise key pieces, plan fittings tightly, and jump the production queue to arrange final delivery to your hotel or your home city once we have achieved a satisfactory trial fit.

I am unfamiliar with Indian climate and dress codes. Will I get guidance that makes sense for both Mumbai and my home city?

Absolutely. Many of our expat clients divide their time between different geographies. We help you choose fabrics and designs that feel at home in Mumbai’s heat and humidity but also look correct in European, North American, or Middle Eastern settings. We will tell you clearly when a piece is Mumbai‑only and when it can travel universally.

Can you coordinate my appointments around a tight work or travel schedule?

Yes. Our sovereign circuit model is built around private, by‑appointment consultations at residences, hotels, and offices. Share your dates and constraints, and we will recommend the most efficient way to fit in measurements, fittings, and decision‑making without disrupting the reason you are in the city.

I live outside India and may never visit Mumbai. How does an online commission with TailorWear work?

For remote clients, we begin with a detailed digital briefing to understand your lifestyle, existing wardrobe, and fit preferences. Depending on feasibility, we then guide you through a structured measurement process, sometimes using a well‑fitting reference garment, and shortlist fabrics via high‑resolution swatches and, where necessary, physical swatch shipments.

How do you manage fit if you have never seen me in person?

We ask for specific reference points—photos in fitted clothing, posture notes, and measurements taken in a precise sequence. For new online clients, we may start with one or two test garments to calibrate fit. Once the pattern is dialled in, future commissions become significantly more straightforward and predictable.

What happens if the garment needs adjustment once it reaches me overseas?

We design the process assuming at least minor fine‑tuning. Depending on your location, we may work with a trusted alterations tailor near you, with clear instructions and reimbursement up to an agreed limit, or have the piece shipped back to the atelier for correction. The goal is to get the pattern right early so that subsequent pieces arrive closer to perfect out of the box.

I am a groom and overwhelmed by choices. Where do we even start?

We usually begin with the ceremony itself: venue, season, time of day, number of events, cultural expectations, and how formal you want to feel next to your partner and family. From there, we build a narrow, curated set of silhouettes—suits, sherwanis, bandhgalas, or combinations—and recommend fabrics that will photograph well and remain comfortable through long rituals and celebrations. You must read our post, Wedding Outfit for Men, to gain deeper insights on how you should plan.

Can you coordinate my wedding outfit with my broader trousseau and events like cocktails or receptions?

Of course, yes! We treat the wedding as a sequence rather than a single night. Many grooms commission a primary ceremonial piece plus one or two suits or jackets that can serve cocktails, receptions, events like Sangeet, Mehndi, civil functions, and future formal events. We make sure the pieces do not fight each other visually, coordinate well with the bride and family, and that you can re‑wear them long after the wedding.

How far in advance should I approach TailorWear for a wedding commission?

For a fully considered wedding wardrobe, we recommend reaching out three to six months before your first event. This allows time for design exploration, fabric sourcing, fittings, and any unforeseen changes in schedule or physique. Shorter timelines are sometimes possible, but the earlier we begin, the more composed and stress‑free the process becomes. Keep in mind that in India, weddings are a peak season time.

What is the core difference between your bespoke suits and high‑end ready‑to‑wear?

A TailorWear suit begins with an original blueprint drafted for your body, rather than an existing block altered to approximate your shape. Canvas, shoulder architecture, buttoning point, and lapel design are all tuned to your posture and proportions, resulting in a suit that looks quieter, moves better, and ages more gracefully than off‑the‑rack alternatives.

How do you approach shirts for clients who already own many branded shirts?

We treat shirts as instruments rather than afterthoughts. That means paying attention to collar architecture for your face and tie habits, cuff style for your watch, placket and fabric for how you appear on camera, and length and hem design for how you actually wear them—tucked, untucked, or both.

I struggle to find trousers that fit my seat and thighs. Can you solve just the trousers problem?

Yes. Many commissions begin with trousers. We study how you stand and move, the slope of your seat, and how you like trousers to break over your shoes. Rise, waistband treatment, pocket placement, and leg line are then drafted around that reality, creating a pattern we can reuse across dress, travel, and casual trousers. Our comprehensive guide on men’s trousers might give you more information on your options.

What is different about your sherwanis compared to typical wedding rentals or ready‑made brands?

Our sherwanis are cut with the same pattern discipline as our suits: engineered around your posture, shoulder line, and the realities of long ceremonies. We focus on clean architecture, consider embroidery or surface work where relevant, and fabrics that feel luxurious but remain breathable and wearable beyond a single evening. You wear a sherwani, or your wedding outfit, only for memories or pictures. Imagine how it would look if you wore one that is odd‑sized, gaudy, and made you look like a fake prince. That’s what many ready‑made or rental sherwanis end up doing to you.
