No other culture is so invested in weddings as the Indian culture is.
As they say, in India, it is not just the girl and the boy who marry, but their entire families do so.

With so many cultures and traditions, wholesale inspirations coming from Bollywood movies, and people opening to the idea of marrying into societies and communities different than theirs, Indian weddings have become more elaborate, more inclusive, and much more fun than in the past.

The wedding itinerary has many sub-events that precede or succeed the main event. Though there is a laundry list of such ceremonies varying from one culture to another, a few that prominently figure in most are Engagement, Mehandi, Tilak, Sangeet, and Reception. We see many people have added a few more events like prewedding shoots, cocktail dinners, and pool parties to add a bit of urban, western touch to the whole affair.

The Groom’s Event Checklist

  • Engagement: Classic Jodhpuri Suit or Bundi Suit paired with a rich white shirt.
  • Sangeet: Deep Emerald or Navy Kurta with a Bundi.
  • Cocktail: Midnight Blue Tuxedo with a Peak Lapel or a Double-Breasted Suit.
  • Wedding: Bespoke Sherwani, well coordinated with the bride’s trousseau.
  • Reception: A tailored Spezzato (Broken Suit) or a classic Black Tie ensemble.
💡 Tip from TailorWear
Atelier Secret: Never match your tie exactly to the bride’s dress. Instead, ‘coordinate’ by picking a shade 2-3 tones darker or lighter. It looks sophisticated, not staged.

All this hustle and bustle adds a lot of complexity for the groom.
For starters, most men hate shopping for clothes. But this is one occasion when they cannot afford not to shop. After all, their clothes would become part of their memories through photographs and event videos. In most cases, brides finalize their dresses first. It makes it even more difficult for the groom to look for clothes that match or coordinate with the bride’s dress. So, shopping for clothes becomes an all-important chore for the groom’s family. To find the best-coordinated pieces, they go from shop to shop and market to market. Since off-the-shelf stores only sell what they have, the quest for just the right clothes continues until the family is tired. Then they end up buying the best-compromised options. Not a great situation, but that has been happening until now.

The Main Ceremony: The “Biella to Benaras” Sherwani

The wedding Sherwani is the pinnacle of the groom’s wardrobe. At TailorWear, we specialize in bridging the gap between Italian structural precision and Indian hand-loomed heritage. Whether it’s an intricate Benaras weave or a minimalist ivory silhouette, the secret lies in the high-cut armhole, allowing you to participate in the Varmaala with ease.

2026 COLOR THEORY

The “Sophisticated Sage” Palette

“For the morning Pheras, pair a slate grey bundi with a cream kurta. It complements the bride’s sage lehenga without competing for attention.”

What Our Groom Says About His TailorWear Experience & his advice to others on buying Wedding Outfits for Men

Usually, the bride, or from the bride’s side, selects their wedding outfit much earlier. The challenge is for the groom to truly match those outfits. When grooms go to the market looking for readymade options, they often don’t find the attire they had imagined for their big day. In most cases, they get tired and end up compromising.

With the TailorWear team, you don’t need to compromise on what you want to wear on your wedding day. You can focus entirely on the festivities and arrangements, while your attire – designed and stitched exactly to your requirements- is handled by the team. They translate your ideas into the final product and deliver an absolutely fantastic result.

How TailorWear helps Grooms buy their Wedding Outfits

How it works is as explained below:

  1. We meet the groom (and his family if they stay together). The objective of this meeting is to understand their taste, get the references from the bride’s side and of course, take the measurements.
  2. We come up with the design options for the groom and further brainstorm to finalize all the looks. We then drill down each ensemble to different pieces, i.e., sangeet- kurta for the groom and/or for father, brother, etc., or cocktail-tuxedo for the groom, or sherwani for the groom and clothes for his best men, so on and so forth. Since we have been in the industry for a long time and have worked for the best designers as job workers, we carry a lot of expertise in designing whatever a groom wants for his big day. We have access to some of the best fabric mills from around the world. We call this – “From Biella to Benaras.” It means whether one wants the finest Italian material for a classy suit or a tuxedo (click here to see our fabric range), we have that with us. For Sherwani, we have suppliers from all over India, places like Surat to Benaras, Chanderi, Bhagalpur, or Kanjivaram.
  3. We meet for the fittings of all the pieces with different silhouettes.
  4. We meet again either for the final fitting (if needed) or to start the clothes deliveries as they get ready.

TailorWear Value for the Groom & his Family

Our grooms outsource the hassles of organizing the coordinated clothes to us.
We design their clothes grounds up basis the exact requirement and taste instead of selling what we already have with us. It is a tremendous value for any groom.
We also help other men in the family, i.e., brothers, fathers, and friends, with their clothes. It brings out the best coordination for everyone and looks great in the pictures.
They don’t have to step out of their homes for anything.
Since we meet at their residence, they can try out their TailorWear clothes with shoes/jootis or other accessories that they would have bought for the ceremony.
Commitment to time is a very important principle for us. We have refused business if we were full with orders and felt that we wouldn’t be able to deliver on time. It means that when our clients place their orders with us, we do all the calendar follow-up and ensure that the pieces are ready on time. It means that the family can focus on all the other activities and planning that a wedding requires.
If you think there is any better solution or something we should do more, to help our grooms outsource their wedding wardrobe and focus on the festivities, we will be waiting for your suggestions. Our mission is to help our customers put their best foot forward. And, which is the most important day for them to look their best, other than their own wedding!

Wedding Attire: Masterclass FAQs

Can I wear a tuxedo to an Indian wedding reception?

Absolutely. The Reception is the most appropriate time for Western formalwear. A classic black or midnight navy tuxedo is a sophisticated choice for a groom or a close family member looking to pivot from traditional attire to modern elegance.

What is the best outfit for a summer Sangeet?

For a summer Sangeet, comfort is key. We recommend a **lightweight silk or linen-blend Bandi (Nehru Jacket)** paired with a breathable cotton silk kurta. This allows for movement during dancing while maintaining a sharp, structured silhouette.

Should a groom’s outfit match the bride’s?

Coordination is better than an exact match. Instead of wearing the identical shade, try to complement the bride’s palette. For example, if she is in deep red, the groom could wear an ivory Sherwani with a pocket square or stole in a matching red accent.

Are Jodhpuri suits appropriate for corporate wedding guests?

Yes, the Jodhpuri (Bandhgala) is the ‘Executive’ choice of ethnic wear. It offers the formality of a business suit with a distinct Indian heritage, making it perfect for professionals attending high-society wedding ceremonies.

What are the trending colors for grooms in 2026?

While ivory and gold remain timeless, 2026 is seeing a shift toward **Earth Tones** like sage green, dusty rose, and ‘Midnight Teal’. These shades offer a refined, contemporary look that stands out in professional wedding photography.

Can I wear a suit to the main Pheras?

While a suit is technically formal, the main ritual (Pheras) usually calls for traditional attire like a Sherwani or Achkan. If you prefer a suit, ensure it is in a lighter, festive color like beige or light grey, rather than standard office navy or charcoal.

Which fabric is best for a winter wedding Sherwani?

For winter, **heavy-weight Silk Jamawar or Velvet** is ideal. These fabrics offer a natural warmth and a rich, light-catching texture that looks regal during evening functions in cooler climates like North India.

What shoes should I wear with a Bandhgala?

For a formal Bandhgala, opt for **dark tan or black leather Oxfords or Wholecuts**. If you are leaning toward a more traditional look, a pair of handcrafted **leather Mojaris** in a neutral tone is a perfect match.

How many buttons should be on a formal Nehru Jacket?

A standard formal Bundi or Nehru Jacket features **5 to 7 buttons**. For a sleek, modern look, 5 buttons are preferred; for a more traditional, military-inspired aesthetic, 7 buttons create a more structured chest profile.
